Our journey began in March 2018 when a group of 15 friends united with a shared vision of helping rural communities in Sri Lanka. Driven by a commitment to empower school children in remote areas, we set out to alleviate the hardships they face and facilitate their education.
With a comprehensive and holistic approach, we focus on grassroots-level initiatives to promote family care across Sri Lanka. Our efforts aim to support families in preventing abandonment, ensuring children receive an education to break the cycle of poverty, and introducing a foster care system that upholds every child’s fundamental right to grow up in a loving family. From birth to adulthood, we strive to reunite, educate, support, and strengthen disadvantaged and forgotten children and families of all faiths.
Our solution-based model to combat the institutionalisation of children encompasses a variety of impactful projects.
These include establishing preschools to provide low-cost and free early learning intervention and childcare, supplying school books and resource packs to children from impoverished families, and donating commercial sewing machines to empower single mothers to earn an income from home. Additionally, we offer free training sessions in literacy, numeracy, financial management, and bag-making, while also equipping local and national childcare services with training in alternative family and foster care systems.
Support Our School passionately advocates for the belief that “Children Belong in Loving Families, Not Orphanages.” We campaign to raise awareness about the long-term emotional and physical harm caused by institutionalisation. This is not merely an act of charity but a matter of human justice, affirming that every child deserves to be loved and educated within a family setting.
Through targeted development projects that address specific needs, Support Our School provides the knowledge, resources, and tools required to improve conditions in orphanages, prevent abandonment, strengthen families, and drive sustainable change within communities and across the nation.
